SOUTH BEND - In a tussle that was tied eight times and featured 11 lead changes South Bend came away with a 64-58 Pacific 2B League victory there Friday. The Indians enjoyed the home court advantage as they took to the free throw line 17 times in the final period, sinking eight to help pull the game out.
Naselle's Ollie Baker canned one of three treys he would hit to open the final period and knot the contest at 45-45. South Bend took a 55-48 lead with 3:15 remaining in the contest, but Austin Burkhalter's old-fashion three-point play at the 2:22 mark brought the Comets to within 55-53.
Twice the Indians' Ty Lorton scored on layins after steals and a freebie put the home team up 60-53 with 1:30 remaining, but Burkhalter's long "three" made the score 60-56 with 15 seconds. Four more South Bend foul shots were more than enough to offset a put-back by Burkhalter with three seconds remaining.
Both squads were 22-60 from the field for 37 percent and both made half of their foul shots. The Indians were 12-24 and the Comets were 7-14 as Naselle was whistled for 20 fouls by Grays Harbor officials and South Bend was called for but 10. The Indians are now 7-4 and 3-1 in the Pacific, while Naselle drops to 8-4 overall and 2-2 in league play.
Naselle's Manny Lopez scored 23 points and brought down 15 rebounds and Burkhalter had 20 points and 13 boards to post double-doubles and Drew Macy and Marcos Herrera added two each as only four Comets found the scoring column. Ty Lorton led South Bend with 21 points, while Brett Rose scored 12 and Ryan Vongmixay tallied 11.
The Comets C-squad won 32-17 behind Chris Walkowiak's 12 points, but the Naselle JV team dropped a 36-29 decision despite Rob Baker's dozen points.
