Ilwaco High School

ILWACO - Ilwaco track teams honored their own last week, handing out individual awards and celebrating five school records set this season.

The boys and girls teams voted Garret Binion Most Inspirational for his efforts in 2003. Michelle Wroble was the Most Improved Lady Fishermen. Jordan Williams won the award on the boys' side. Williams achieved three state tournament participation awards this season, a rare feat for a freshman, as he was part of the cross country, basketball and track teams that went all the way this year.

The Coaches Award was bestowed on a very deserving Kristi Freese. The freshman pole vault state-qualifying competitor overcame many physical obstacles to excel this season. No surprise was the Most Valuable Team Player award given to state champion and record holder in the 800 meter run, Nate Appel. What was noteworthy was the senior won the award, not on his brilliant performances, but on the merit of his leadership and positive attitude.

Appel bested his 400 meter school record as well as eclipsing the mark in the 800 by a comfortable margin. The 4x400 relay team of Binion, Ed Guelfi, Williams, and Appel demolished the school record and set a new mark in the Medley Relay. The Medley consists of a 1200 meter leg (Guelfi), 400 meters (Binion), 800 meters (Williams), and a final 1600 meter run (Appel).

Guelfi set and then tied the 300 intermediate hurdles mark this season for the highly successful Fishermen track squads. Coaches Joe Williams and Jo Peterson did the honors in doling out the student-voted awards and bestowed letters upon those track athletes who earned them in 2003.
