NASELLE — Kaylee Sowle drew a foul from Taylor Gudmundsen on a three-pointer from the left corner with four-tenths of a second left, then made two of three free throws to give Mary M. Knight the 44-43 win over Naselle Tuesday. Sowle finished with 31 points. Lilli Zimmerman had a huge game for Naselle, with 21 points and 10 rebounds on nine of 10 shooting.
Sowle had missed the front end of a one-and-one with 24.6 seconds left and Knight trailing by one, forcing her to quickly foul Sophie Scrabeck. Scrabeck made the front end of her own one-and-one but had it negated by a Comet lane violation, giving Knight the ball back with 20.8 seconds left.
With the Comets’ whole defense focused on her, Sowle maneuvered through everyone into the lane and dropped off a pass to Jadyn Davidson, but Davidson’s shot rolled off. The rebound went out of bounds to Knight. With under three seconds left, Sowle caught the in-bounds pass in the corner. Gudmundsen came at her with her arms straight up, trying to avoid the foul. Sowle put up the shot and drew contact on her release, then buried the winning free throws.
Naselle had gone ahead 41-37 with an 8-0 fourth-quarter run, as Kenzie Glenn hit two three-pointers and Lilli Zimmerman scored over two defenders in the low post. Davidson scored inside on a pass from Sowle to cut it to one. Sowle then hit a three with 1:47 to go for the 42-41 lead.
Peyton Dalton put Naselle back on top with 1:24, remaining, getting fouled while shooting and burying both free throws. Both teams committed two turnovers in the next minute before Sowle brought the Owls victory on their final possession.
