State Senate honors South Bend champions

OLYMPIA — The Washington State Senate recognized and congratulated the South Bend High School football team last week with a standing ovation and a floor resolution in their honor.

The resolution was sponsored by State Sen. Brian Hatfield, D-Raymond, and spoke to the character of the sportsmen both on and off the field.

Hatfield emphasized the transformation witnessed throughout the community during the triumphant season.

“The way the community rallied behind this team was incredible,” Hatfield said. “The way sports can bring a community together is truly inspiring. I commend the players for their hard work, the coaches for their dedication and the community itself for their unwavering support and encouragement.”

Nearly the entire team travelled to Olympia for the event – with each player’s name read and recorded into the formal record.

A celebration was had after the adoption of the resolution where Hatfield and other members of the Senate had the chance to talk to the players personally to congratulate them on their outstanding achievement.

“Though this championship was a first for the Indians, I know it won’t be their last,” Hatfield said. “I look forward to celebrating with them again in this same spot after next season.”
