Nestucca, Oregon — Ilwaco took second place in a 12-school field at a boys’ wrestling tournament in Nestucca, Oregon on Saturday, Dec. 17, finishing behind only Scio, Oregon. Marcus Connor took first place in the 195-pound weight class. The same day, Kasey Bageant and Serena Kuhn each took first-place at a seven-team girls tournament at Castle Rock. As the only wrestler in the 113-pound division, Aaron Chetwood added another first-place finish to Ilwaco’s Nestucca haul just by showing up.
Keegan Kemmer’s standout freshman year continued with a second-place finish in 120.
“Keegan Kemmer had a solid outing, getting to the finals once again, but just ran into a bigger, stronger kid,” Ilwaco coach Kevin McNulty said. Cahlahbe Whelden also took second for Ilwaco, which had 17 top-five finishers.
“[Nestucca] was a good tournament for us because they ran 16 person brackets, and we were able to get a lot of our younger wrestlers into the tournament,” McNulty said. Freshmen Cory Morrison, Griffen Cutting and Michael Rodda (4th place at 221-285 pounds) all got their first varsity wins, while fellow freshman Nate Hopkins took sixth at 106.
Ilwaco went 29-24 at a mix-and-match in Astoria, facing wrestlers from Kelso, RA Long, Mark Morris and the host school Astoria. With wrestlers matched up on experience and ability, Keegan Kemmer, Joe Thompson, Griffen Cutting, Brandon Duke, Chris Wood, Kevin Eros, Jorge Galvan, Serena Kuhn, Cahlahbe Whelden and Marcello Lazaro all went 2-0.
