MONTESANO - Evergreen champion Tenino gave the Lady Fishermen a convincing demonstration of why they are 19-2 this season as they blew to a 22-1 first quarter lead en route to a 69-52 District IV tournament win in Montesano Thursday.
The Lady Beavers executed their offense to perfection and rebounded the few shots Ilwaco was able to muster in the initial eight minutes. "They shot very well the first quarter and for the game," coach Joe Williams said of Tenino. "We were able to get going in the second half and execute our offense, but we just didn't have an answer for Nikki Johnson and they did an excellent job of getting their best players the basketball."
Johnson poured in 36 points, scoring at will from the inside or from beyond the three-point arc for Tenino. Heather Hocking and Ashley Kitzman were able to get untracked and tally 16 points each the final three periods. Hocking also dished out six assists and Kitzman grabbed 14 rebounds for a "double-double."
Mary Margaret Tomberlin scored seven points and nabbed five rebounds after coming off the bench, including hitting her only "three" attempt of the game. Michelle Wroble added seven points with four steals and Ashley Fauver tacked on six fourth-quarter scores.
Ilwaco shot 17 of 62 from the floor for a paltry 27 percent and were a credible 13-17 from the line (76 percent) due in large part to Kitzman's 6-6 and Hocking's 5-6 from the charity stripe. Tenino was 8-12 from the foul line for 67 percent and shot 30-66 from the field (45 percent).
The Lady Fishermen grabbed 32 rebounds to 44 for Tenino and committed 13 fouls to the winners 15. The loss drops Ilwaco's season record to 12-9 and places them in the loser's bracket at district.
