ILWACO Before the contest Coach Ned Bittner cautioned, Stevenson is a dangerous team. After the lead had changed hands nine times by the start of the third period they had made believers of fans in Ilwaco Friday, Jan. 21. The Lady Fishermen were able to pull out a 45-39 win over the Lady Bulldogs, but it was far from easy.
Trailing at intermission 23-20 Ilwacos Alexa Wirkkala started the second half with a pair of foul shots and a double-dose of three-point shots to put her team ahead to stay 28-23. Kady Kirby capped off an 11-0 run by Ilwaco with another three pointer and all the Lady Bulldogs could manage in the third quarter was one field goal, as the girls from the Gorge trailed 33-25 going into the final frame.
In the fourth period Elleigh Kainos five points, Alexa Wirkkalas five free throws, and a bucket by Kenzi Wirkkala were enough to hold off Stevenson. Alexa Wirkkala finished with 15 points, six steals, and eight rebounds and Kenzi Wirkkala added nine points and a whopping 20 rebounds. Kaino also scored nine, passed for four assists, and pilfered three steals.
Logan Manecke scored four, Sydney Ward and Kirby three each, and Cindy Pacheco added two to the winning total. Ilwaco was a paltry 15-65 from the floor for 23 percent, but did connect on four treys and they converted 11-20 from the line for 55 percent.
Stevenson made 16-50 from the floor for 32 percent, but was a horrendous 5-17 for 29 percent from the charity stripe. The Lady Bulldogs won the battle of the boards 53-43 as there were plenty of missed shots up for grabs, but the visitors turned the basketball over 25 times to the Lady Fishermens 14 miscues. Fouls were 19 for the home team and 15 for Stevenson.
The Lady Fishermen are now 12-3 on the year and are atop the Trico with an 8-1 mark, while Stevenson plummets to 1-8 in league play.
