ILWACO - Sporting three champions, Ilwaco finished fifth in the eight-team Fishermen Beach Classic wrestling tournament Saturday. Ilwaco grapplers also garnered a second and fourth place medal. Coach Tom Hornbuckle, tired but happy, said, "I am well pleased with the efforts of all the kids, not just the champions. They all wrestled hard."

It took Jerry Matzen just one minute, 23 seconds to claim first place in the 119 weight class. Matzen, rebounding from a couple of difficult losses last week, pinned Noah Hathaway of Elma in :29 and then did the same to Jake Fittro of Castle Rock in :54.

At 189 Matt Bonney thoroughly dominated, winning the championship by pinning Elma's Matt Easton in :47 and "decisioning" Astoria's Tyler Johnson 16-0 and Seaside's Eric Horning 15-0.

Jake Pederson was victorious at 275, pinning Ian Petty of Morton in 1:21 and putting Castle Rock's Caesar Granados' shoulders to the mat in 2:21. In the finals Pederson defeated Astoria's Bert Tucker 13-6.

Derek Duffy lost a thrilling bout to Keane Randall of Seaside 4-0 in the finals of the 130 class. Duffy had pinned Matt Lewellen of Woodland in 3:32 earlier to advance. David Alvarez won his first match of the year by disqualification against Seaside's Clint Mead, but that victory was enough to earn him fourth place at 152.

Also wrestling at 152, Isaac Mendez was pinned twice by Castle Rock's Korryth Yund and Elma's Tony White. Ray Coulston pinned Chauncy Nolan of Seaside in 3:09, but was later pinned himself by Jeff Crowley of Astoria and lost a 4-0 decision to Dan Edwards of Seaside, just missing a fourth-place medal.

Bobby Crislip fared similarly, winning by fall over Ace Philbrice of Elma in 4:56 and then being pinned by Granados in the bout that could have earned him a medal. Sean Brady, wrestling at 160, was pinned by Ryan Reinhardt of Seaside and Cole Inman of Castle Rock.

"Our champions and medal winners competed very well today and our less-experienced guys are developing into better wrestlers," Hornbuckle praised. "I would like to thank the parents who manned the hospitality room all day and to all of the volunteer helpers who made this tournament a success."

Ilwaco hosts Astoria on Tuesday and will travel to Stevenson Thursday for their final regular season competition before sub-regionals on Feb. 8.
