Astoria can claim partial credit for a basketball state championship this year, as former Fisherman Eric Viuhkola – now the head coach at West Linn – led the Lions to the Class 6A boys’ title Saturday night.

West Linn defeated Central Catholic 45-41 in the state championship game, capping a 23-6 season.

The Lions narrowly got past Grant in the quarterfinals Wednesday, 51-50, then scored another one-point victory (37-36) over Lake Oswego in the semifinals Friday.

Viuhkola is a Class of 1987 Astoria graduate.

Meanwhile, Astoria grad Kevin Goin is the boys basketball coach at West Salem High School, where he led the Titans to a league championship in the Class 6A Central Valley Conference this year.

West Salem (23-3 overall, 10-0 in league) lost a first-round OSAA playoff to David Douglas Feb. 26.
