White Salmon pulls ahead of IHS in volleyball

ILWACO - It was nip and tuck through the first two games of Trico volleyball between Ilwaco and White Salmon, then the visiting Bruins pulled away from the Lady Fishermen to win three games to one Thursday.

The Bruins won the first game 24-26, Ilwaco broke a 22-22 tie to win game two 25-22, and led 10-9 midway through game three before the doldrums hit the Lady Fishermen. White Salmon won the final two contests 25-19 and 25-15.

"We played very well, then we just went flat," Coach Grant Chinn said of his team's efforts. Early on Heather Hocking, using her athleticism and court sense, mixed a combination of sets, deft dinks, and diving digs to spark Ilwaco. Mary Margaret Tomberlin hit the floor several times to dig out tough balls and hit two key spikes to get Ilwaco ahead two of the eight times the lead changed hands in game one.

Nicole Adams served to get the Lady Fishermen ahead at 24-23, but the Lady Bruins were able to pull the game out. In game two, Freshman, Brianna Smith, was able to contribute with steady defensive play and Katie Hazen put down a spike and served well to give Ilwaco a commanding 15-8 lead.

Hocking continued her excellent floor play, twice blocking White Salmon smashes and twice lobbing the ball to an open area in their defense for easy points. Brittney Fox and Adams served the final points as the Bruins had come back to knot the score at 22-22 in game two.

The combination of Fox and Adams serving and hustling play from the entire team put the Lady Fishermen ahead 10-9 in game three, but then the girls seemed to lose momentum. White Salmon went on to easily defeat Ilwaco 25-19 and built a commanding 24-12 lead in the final game when a great defensive dive by Hazen and a strong kill from the freshmen sparked Ilwaco to a 24-15 deficit before the final point gave the Lady Bruins the win.

Ilwaco is now 1-4 on the season and will go to Stevenson Tuesday and Naselle Thursday for a non-league contest. They are slated for a tournament in Ocosta next Saturday.
