ILWACO - Sometimes the best defense is a good offense and Ilwaco's ball-possession ground game kept the football out of LaCenter's hands for a majority of the first half and the Fishermen played inspired defense when the Wildcats did have the pigskin.
Ilwaco trailed 7-0 at intermission and fell behind 21-0 before Skyler Olson broke free for an 80 yard touchdown run to make the final score of the Trico League football 21-6 at Peterson Field Friday. Olson would finish with a career high 112 yards on 13 carries. He was untouched on his scoring scamper with 1:38 remaining in the game.
Dylan Short on the offensive and defensive line was a Fishermen standout, as was Josh Berteaux in his maiden voyage at quarterback. The Ilwaco secondary of Austin Wirkkala, Justice Schenk, Olson, and Berteaux was also stellar.
LaCenter attempted eight running plays and Nick Doetsch threw all 10 of his passes in the first half, competing six. The Wildcats literally ran out the clock in the second half as they rushed the football 31 times without going to the air once. Ilwaco's Berteaux attempted a pass in each half.
Ilwaco is now 1-4 for the year and 0-3 in the Trico, while LaCenter improves to 2-1 in league play. Statistics were provided by Rod Anderson.
