ILWACO — Jack Kaino took first place at the Jim Blair invitational at Castle Rock Jan. 9, helping Ilwaco to a second place team finish at the 12-school tournament. Kaino won his 160 weight class. The Fishermen also had seven wrestlers contribute second-place finishes: Tony Merino, Riki Thompson, Joe Lopez, Daylin Kemmer, Brandon Sparks, DeAntay Kellogg and Alec Bell. Ilwaco had a score of 200 for the tournament, behind only host Castle Rock at 247.5.

At a Jan. 8-9 girls’ tournament in Kelso with over 400 competitors, Ilwaco’s Hilda Mondragon finished fifth of 27 in her weight class. Kasey Bageant won her first round and lost her second, then won two rounds in the consolation bracket.

Also at Kelso on Jan. 9, Ilwaco’s junior varsity boys took three first place finishes, with Brandon Duke, Christoffer Hansen and Sander Svenungsoon each winning his weight class.
