LONG BEACH - "We are the champions," is the anthem for the Long Beach Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken 13- and 14-year-old prep team as they won the Lower Columbia League with a 14-2 record, according to Coach Mick DeSimone.

The team combined strong pitching, solid defense, powerful hitting, and a potent running game in amassing their victories over teams from Seaside, Knappa, Warrenton, and Astoria.

Top mound men on the squad were Casey Marsh, Eddie Knick, and Colton Chalker, according to the coach. Chalker also played shortstop and Knick was the catcher when he was not pitching. Jake Nesbitt and Luke Jensen also saw action behind the plate.

Matt Kaino and Marsh saw action at the keystone, taking their turns with Colton Chalker at second base and shortstop. Jeff Nesbitt provided power at the plate and had "a tremendous year" at first base, according to DeSimone.

Jordan DeSimone manned centerfield when he wasn't playing third or first base. He was flanked in the outfield by Cody Chalker, R.J. Jamison, Channtell Bullock, Jake Nesbitt, Jensen, and Junior Tualacon.

The team was coached by Greg Chalker, DeSimone, and Bo Hussey. All-stars chosen for the Lower Columbia League 13 year old age group were Matt Kaino, Jordan DeSimone, and Eddie Knick.
